Your license arrived. Your nerves did too. The first year is where most people wing it, burn out, or both. Let’s skip that.

Here’s a straight, workable set of habits I wish someone handed me on day one.

    1) Fix the first five minutes

If a client starts confused, they rarely rebook.

    • Send a mobile-first intake/consent link immediately after booking.

    • Put a single QR code at reception for anyone who missed it.

    • Skim their record before hello so you can greet them with something specific (“Noted you’re sensitive to fragrance—got you.”).

    2) Use a simple consult script

    You don’t need a TED Talk—just a rhythm.

    • Goal: “What result would make today a win?”

    • History: allergies, sensitivities, last treatments.

    • Plan: what you’ll do, how it might feel, what to avoid later.
Say it the same way every time; nerves drop, trust rises.

    3) Keep a tiny, visible policy

    Policies fail when they’re vague.

    • One paragraph covering late/cancel/no-show, inside the consent.

    • Repeat the key line on confirmations and reminders.

    • Use neutral language: firm, never icy.

    4) Master the five-minute reset

    Right after each client—timer on:

    • Add treatment notes and product used.

    • Add any reactions or preferences.

    • Set a follow-up (patch test reminder, refill date).
This tiny ritual is why your third month feels lighter than your first.

    5) Rebook before payment

If they “check their calendar later,” they won’t.
Offer two options tied to results: “To keep this glow, let’s do four weeks—Wed 4:30 or Thu 6:15?”

    6) Photograph like a pro (with consent)

    • Same wall, same lighting, same angle—before and after.

    • Save to the client record, not your camera roll chaos.

    • Caption with service, who it’s for, and return window. Clarity books.

    7) Start small with retail

Recommend one at-home step that supports today’s service.

    • Map where it lives: AM, PM, or weekly.

    • Note an estimated run-out date and send a friendly refill nudge later.

    8) Create add-ons that fit your day

Two to five quick add-ons (10–20 minutes) that you can perform without blowing up the schedule. Present them next to the core service, not hidden on another page.

    9) Build your quiet growth engine

    • Add “Who referred you?” to intake and thank referrers within 24 hours.

    • Keep your Google Business Profile complete and current.

    • Send one short, useful message to your list each month—openings, seasonal bundles, or simple tips.

    10) Protect your energy

    • Price and time-block honestly—door to door, not just hands-on.

    • Batch admin once a week.

    • If you’re always running over, resize the service or what’s included. Resentment is a pricing problem in disguise.

    Week-one checklist

    • Set up booking, digital intake, and searchable client records.

    • Write your 3-step consult script on a sticky note.

    • Print one QR for intake; place it at the mirror.

    • Draft two DMs: rebook ask and referral thank-you.

    • Time your top three services and adjust blocks.

You don’t need to be louder or flashier. You need clean starts, consistent notes, and clear next steps. Do that, and you’ll look “booked and busy” without living in your DMs.
